Satel enhances product development

Salo-based Satel develops and manufactures radio modems and other wireless communications systems. Satel’s mission critical wireless data connections are in use within over 70 countries. Exports account for 90% of the sales. Application areas include telemetry of agriculture machinery, intelligent traffic systems, monitoring and control of power and water infrastructure as well as industrial processes, safety and weather systems and telemetry of engine control for rally cars.

”Industrial internet has been part of Satel’s business for almost 30 years. Recently, Internet of Things has become familiar also for consumers”, tells group manager Kalle Suominen, who runs the Test System Development unit at Satel.

”For a typical customer of ours, our product is a black box conveying data and instructions vía radio channel. Reliability must be top class. When for instance an oil refinery control room commands a valve to close, the command must get through”, sums up Kalle Suominen.

Typical Satel products include a radio unit and a processor with embedded software controlling it. The company decided to turn to Etteplan's experts to make software testing more effective. The pilot will finish in May 2017.

”Developers gave us praising feedback already during the project. We used Jenkins software to automate the production process and Robot Framework to do the same for regression and routine tests. The work of our professional developers and test engineers becomes easier, and some of their time is released for as productive work as possible”, says Kalle Suominen with satisfaction.

”A frequent and efficient testing cycle reveals errors as early as possible. In the longer term, I expect that the quality of our software and products will improve and we will get better and more readily available products to the market much faster”, states Kalle Suominen.

The development project with Etteplan remained on schedule and in budget. And the results are so far fulfilling all our expectations”, Kalle Suominen praises.
